On 1 May 2014, the 1st New World Springboard Inter-District Swimming Championships was held at Tung Chung Swimming Pool where the students of New World Swimming Academy, a sustainable community programme under New World Springboard, were gathered to compete against each other.

Swimmers Strive for the Spirit of Indomitability

Over 120 students from three districts, namely Tung Chung, Shamshuipo and Tuen Mun, demonstrated their swimming skills acquired during the past two years of professional training and gave their best shots, aptly demonstrating their team spirits. Gary Chen, Executive Director and Joint General Manager of the Group presented at the event as the officiating guest and cheered for the students. More than 150 parents and a group of mentors formed cheerleading squads to spice up the ambience. Eventually the Overall Championsip went to Tung Chung District.

Inspirational Sharing from Representatives of Hong Kong Swimming Team

In addition to the exciting competition, the little swimmers had the chance to meet two sought-after representatives from Hong Kong Swimming team Wong Chun Yan and Chan Kin Lok who gave a swimming demonstration and shared their invaluable experience from their swimming journey. The two elites motivated the participants to set their own personal goals and to stay perseverance when facing challenges.

New World Swimming Academy

Since July 2012, the Group and Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association have joined forces on New World Swimming Academy under New World Springboard. Implementing at Tung Chung, Shamshuipo and Tuen Mun, the programme offers different training classes for students at different levels, allowing swimmers with potential and passion for the sport to be discovered.

New World Springboard, funded by New World Group Charity Foundation, aims at improving and helping the youth develop a positive outlook on life and learn to face challenges by an indomitable spirit.

The current phase of the project focuses on swimming and basketball sports by providing seven years of professional training to under-resourced children and youth aged from seven to 12. Together with New World Swimming Academy and New World Basketball League, New World Springboard Mentorship Programme has made New World Springboard a truly meaningful sustainable community programme. Over 370 mentors have been recruited from the Group to help students embrace the challenges in growing up. The Group organises various activities such as theme park tours and company visits to broaden students' horizons and strengthen the bonds between mentors and students. The new phase of New World Springboard Mentorship Programme involves one-on-one mentorship which was started in the beginning of 2014. We invite colleagues and their family members to be mentors to help under-resourced youth step onto their springboard.
